I have GIMP 2.6.1. I hope that is what you have!
1. Open the file that the other person is in.
2. Remove the background so just the person’s figure is there. To do this use GIMP’s selection tools to make an outline around the person’s body.
Use the “paths tool” that is located in GIMP’s toolbox to make an outline around the person’s figure, then press enter to select their figure. When their figure is selected, you should see a white highlighted line around their figure that looks like “dancing ants.”
3. Once the person’s figure is selected, hit COPY and then PASTE. You achieve this by going to EDIT and hitting COPY, then going to EDIT and hitting PASTE. After you paste, you should see a yellow box around the person’s figure.
5. Now hit CTRL+L to open the Layers Dialogue Box. Above the photo you initially opened you should see a layer called “Floating Selection (Pasted Layer).”
Now look in the lower left hand corner of the Layer’s dialogue box, you should see a small icon that looks like a white piece of paper. Click on that icon and the person’s figure will be pasted into a new layer with a gray checkerboard looking background and the background from the original photo will be gone. Remember to click on the EYE to make the original layer disappear so you can see the person’s figure.
Now you can touch up the edges of the person’s figure with the ERASER tool to really remove any pieces of the original background left. Use the Zoom in and Zoom out function to help you.
6. Remove the layer that the original photo is in by right clicking on that layer in the layers dialogue box and hitting “delete layer.” Now you just have the layer with the person’s figure.
7. Go to FILE and hit SAVE AS. Save the file as a .PNG file by clicking on the + sign beside the words “Select File Type (By extension.) If you don’t save the file as a .PNG, you will ruin all your hard work!
8. Close out your newly created .PNG file in GIMP, and then open the photo you are in. Now go to FILE and Open As LAYERS, then open the .PNG file you just created. Now you should see the other person’s figure in the same picture with you. Open the Layers Dialogue Box (CTRL+L) and click on the EYE to make the person disappear and reappear. Then highlight the layer by clicking on it so you can manipulate it.
9. You will need to resize and reposition the other person’s figure probably. Use SCALE LAYER (Right click on the layer) and GIMP’s Transform Tools found in TOOLS to help you. Also remember to use the MOVE TOOL (two blue arrows in GIMP’s toolbox) so you can move the other person’s figure. Just remember to have their layer selected!
10. Once you reposition/resize the other person, save the file and presto!
