Some graphics programs offer trial versions of their software, so you’d have a limited time to work with it for free.
Your best bet, however, is to spend a little money on a freelance artist to help you with this. There are many considerations when creating a logo that an experienced artist will automatically take into consideration, such as choosing color(s) that will be easily and well-reproduced in the printing process. Also, creating it in a file format that will a) be easily usable by a printer, and b) allow it to be resized larger or smaller without loss of quality. Having those details addressed will save you lots of hassle in the future. http://www.corel.com offers trial versions of their software.
Microsoft Paint is good enough for most logos. I doubt whether you know how to use it. Anyway it’s a simple software. Click Start, go Programs, go Accessories, and you will find Paint! Go through Help.
Good Luck!
